The Nor-Cal Jazz festival returns to the Big Room for an evening of music that stretches from the blues legend himself, Lazy Lester to jazz giant Kurt Ribak. Born in 1938, Lester career spans 6 decades. His 1958 hit ‘Sugar Coated Love’ began a career with whom he performed with such greats as: Slim Harbo, Ligthnin Slim and Katie Webster. His songs have been covered by The Kinks, The Flamin’ Groovies, Freddy Fender, Dwight Yoakam, Dave Edmunds, Raful Neal, Anson Funderburgh, and The Fabulous Thunderbirds.
In 2003, Martin Scorsese included Lester in his blues tribute concert at Radio City Music Hall, a record of which was released as the film and album Lightning in a Bottle. The group photograph inside the album depicted Lester grinning, dead-center among peers and musical progeny including B.B. King, Solomon Burke, Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown, Buddy Guy, Levon Helm, Chuck D, The Neville Brothers, Dr. John, John Fogerty, and Aerosmith.
Headlining the show will be bassist Kurt Ribak and his Quartet that features Lincoln Alder on saxophones, Greg Sankovich on keyboard and Alan Hall on Drums. Kurt is fresh off his latest album “I Got One More” which is getting tremendous air play on jazz stations across the country. Kurt says what he’s trying for in his music is; “Mingus meets The Meters”. A must see wherever he performs, Kurt Ribak’s visit to Chico is sure to be a memorable night for lovers of world class Jazz. Join us for this special musical celebration.
