About The Mother Hips
Originally signed by Rick Rubin while still just students at Chico State, The Mother Hips have spent two-and-a-half decades at the forefront of a new breed of California rock and roll—one equally informed by the breezy harmonies of the Beach Boys, the funky roots of The Band, and the psychedelic Americana of Buffalo Springfield—and established themselves as “one of the Bay Area’s most beloved live outfits” (San Francisco Guardian) through countless headline shows, massive festival appearances, and dates with everyone from Johnny Cash and Wilco to Lucinda Williams and The Black Crowes. The New Yorker lauded the band’s ability to “sing it sweet and play it dirty,” and ‘Chorus’ is perhaps the finest example yet of that intoxicating dichotomy, a richly melodic album firmly rooted in gritty rock and roll with the kind of evocative storytelling that The Mother Hips do best.

Joe Craven & the Sometimers

Brought to you by a Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. and KZFR Community Radio

Joe Craven first captured the wide-eyed stare of many fans in the ’90s as the astonishing percussionist and multi-instrumentalist with the David Grismann Quintet. He approaches his music with an insider’s knowledge and adoration - he performed and recorded with Garcia & Grisman for four years. As an educator, artist and actor, his oeuvre covers a huge range of musical genres and artistic inspirations.

On his jaunty and inventive new album, Garcia Songbook, Craven blazes a new path across the well-worn trails of the beloved and revered Garcia songbook. Bursting forth with exciting and unexpected takes on familiar favorites, the music is seasoned with surprising flavors, deviations, re-imaginings and detours. Craven sings and plays mandolin, fiddle and percussion alongside his band The Sometimers, featuring his daughter Hattie Craven on harmony vocals, plus Bruce MacMillan (guitar, dobro & vocals), Jonathan Stoyanoff (bass & vocals) and Barry Eldridge (drums & percussion).

A portion of tonight’s proceeds will be donated to KZFR. Thank you for your support of community radio!

About Small Town Big Sound

Come tie up your Summer with Small Town Big Sound 2018, an annual celebration of North State music that takes some of our most talented songwriters and places them in front of a modern-day chamber orchestra. Lush, orchestral strings, brass, and winds team up with angelic backup vocalists and a rockin’ rhythm section to shine a light on some of the most exciting music coming out of our region today. If you only make it out to one show this Summer, make sure it’s this one – you don’t want to miss it.

Uncle Dad’s Art Collective was formally founded in November of 2013 as a collaborative venture between musicians, writers, actors, dancers, and visual artists. Since its conception, the collective has produced 9 large scale theatrical and musical shows, monthly mixed media art events, curated live-in-studio performance series, and countless other events. UDAC aims to help foster a culture of theater, music, dance, and other performing arts within Chico – a relaxed, comfortable, inspiring atmosphere where hard-working artists can gather to explore their craft and express themselves freely. Their mission is to realize the artistic ideas of our members and collaborators in a way that makes significant positive impacts – artistically and fiscally – for the individual, the collective, and the community.
